Reflection
I decided to introduce a website on the importance of the Nile River in Ancient Egypt as it relates to the population of children I currently work with. Looking back at standard textbooks within the schools, a lot of information is missing from the actual roots of the African American culture. Slavery is described in great detail, but the positive contributions along with the actual beginnings of the African American culture is often left out. I hope to introduce conversation for extended research on our own culture and integrate these research themes within the social studies curriculum. When producing this website, I incorporated the following North Carolina Essential Standard for Social Studies:
6.G.1.1 Explain how the physical features and human characteristics of a place influenced the development of civilizations, societies and regions (e.g, location near rivers and natural barriers, trading practices and spread of culture).
The focus was not to give a full understanding of the Ancient Egypt Culture and the Nile, but to provide an introduction to the contributions of the Nile and bring up the question: Why was the Nile important to the rise of Ancient Egypt? The website provides examples such as vegetation, transportation, water source, and the Papyrus Reeds which allows for clothing, paper, and transportation as a framework for boats. I would hope to use this website as an introduction to the lesson on Ancient Egypt and discuss ways the students can discuss in groups which of the above contributed the most to the Ancient Egypt civilization and why? Students will be able to reflect using pictures outlined in the website, reference the text, and begin to examine further research in order to ultimately formulate their own opinion based upon evidence of why their choice contributed the most to the rise of Ancient Egypt.
